I found it hard to sympathize with Sandler’s character. Not just the gambling, he was philandering with a woman that he himself referred to as a skank. There were children he was more or less abandoning the fathering of, in the sense that the daughter clearly acted like she didn’t have a dad and the son acted like he was imitating the bad part of the dad. At one point he even spies on his own girlfriend masturbating. I mean, what the hell, this guy literally had not one redeeming quality. And you would watch that twice? I think the reason that he did not get an academy award was exactly why Brad Pitt (my all time fave hottie) did win for his supporting role in Hollywood — the voters vote for likeable characters. Pitt was flawed, yes, but so likeable. The lead actor winner Joachim Phoenix played a murderer who was a thousand times more likeable than Sandler. The Joker was a hideous psycho but the weird thing is every joker has been likeable — from Cesar Romero to Jack Nichoson to Heath Ledger, we all love the Joker always. Or now that I think about it there was one Joker we didn’t like, can’t remember, too lazy to Google it.
Also, in Uncut Gems I had no idea what they were talking about with regard to betting on sports so of course that part of the movie was unintelligible to me. I did like the jewelry part though! I love gems!!!
That said, there are things I like that have an unlikeable main character. For instance, I am a huge Larry David fan — whose worse than him? So after typing all this, I suppose it really comes down to I can’t stand Sandler. I was a junkie. I could not relate. I thought Trainspotting was the most honest movie about addiction — totally unglamorized it, made it look exactly as miserable as it is. A movie about being a junkie I did relate to was with Ben Stiller called Permanent Midnight. In that one he takes a baby with him to score. I mean, talk about unlikeable — but Ben Stiller is cool. Sandler is a first class asshole. He was dating a girl in the South Bay in the aughts where I grew up and everyone down there said he was a shit head. Thought he was so special and great but really exuded the tool vibe.
Sorry I wrote so much, don’t bother reading it. Woops, I guess if you got this far you did. My apologies. I was just so interested to hear your positive spin on this thing because I could not have been more opposite. Let’s not date. Or maybe we should date! Sparks would fly!
